Submission: The Caged Virgin

Today I started reading "The Caged Virgin" by Ayaan Hirsi Ali.
So far she is attacking the Islamic religion/ identity/ culture that she was raised by and tormented by. She does this because of the breach of human rights, in particular women's rights, that the religion is responsible for.
Some very interesting ideas brought forward so far... she fights against promoters of the "multiculturalist" argument... this is because she thinks that by allowing different cultures we are allowing the abuse of human rights within some different cultures. For instance by tolerating Islam we are tolerating the abuse and suppression of women within Islam. I think this is dangerous territory as it begs the question of where and how we allow freedom, of speech, of choice of lifestyle... do we let people choose a lifestyle that prevents other people from choosing their lifestyle.

Ayaan herself fled her Somalian family to avoid an arranged marriage. She moved to the Netherlands and established herself politically and intellectually (board of directors of Amnesty International). In 2004 (?) she made a short film with Theo Van Gogh called Submission: Part 1.

Submission is the literal translation (as well as peace) of the word "Islam"... submission to Allah's will etc.
Theo was murdered by a Muslim for his part in the making of the video.

I am now going to watch Persepolis.
